A massive thanks for all the good wishes since we announced cost-cutting measures at Journal Media last week.
It cheered us enormously.

Here’s the thing: we want to mobilise that support.
https://www.thejournal.ie/contribute/ ">https://www.thejournal.ie/contribut...
We have just now launched a one-off readers’ appeal because we want all of our journalism - our misinformation debunks, our explainers, our podcasts - to continue to reach and inform as many people as possible.

Let me give you some context:
We are able to keep our journalism open and free as a public service by funding ourselves for the most part through advertising.

That stream of revenue has largely dried up for us during the Covid-19 crisis, as it has for other non-State funded news outlets.
That revenue is unlikely to return to its previous levels any time soon, certainly not in the next six months. Possibly beyond.

That puts our whole company’s survival at risk.

That puts the independent, free, factchecking news service we provide at risk of disappearing.
At the same time as our revenue has diminished, the excellent work of @thejournal_ie reporters, supported by colleagues, has never been more in demand.
We saw 830,000 users come to us for news every day across March.
A 40% increase on average daily use in January and February.
We understand that not all of those - or many - can afford to contribute to the readers’ appeal we are launching.
We understand that nearly everyone in the country is worrying about the money in their pocket, now and in the next while.
We understand that it’s not the only worry.
But we want to give our amazing and loyal audience the chance to help us continue to deliver our news service at the level we have been up to now.
If a fraction of our audience were to make a contribution, it would support our mission: to keep quality information open to all.
This is the nub: @thejournal_ie is reaching a mass audience and informing its ability to make good decisions on #Covid19 and other issues BECAUSE it is free.
If you agree that this is the kind of society we should be aiming for, with access to independent, quality information, no matter who you are, and can support us at all, we would be grateful.

If you even got to the end of this thread, thank you and be safe. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🙏" title="Folded hands" aria-label="Emoji: Folded hands">
