#COVID19 has changed how teams work in healthcare. Some have asked what can be done to work better as a team. Here are some of my thoughts based on research (mine + others): 1/ @UMichNursing @UM_IHPI #TheTeamTheTeamTheTeam
1. Be compassionate. All under extreme stress. RNs, MDs, RTs etc are working in unfamiliar units, working with people they do not know. Remind yourself: everyone is doing the best they can (to quote my fav @BreneBrown) 2/ #COVID19
2. Be cognizant. Teams change constantly in ICUs normally https://www.atsjournals.org/doi/pdf/10.1513/AnnalsATS.201903-202IP 3/ #COVID19
3. But in #COVID19, teams are forming, reforming even more rapidly. overall pool of staff are from entire hospital, not just one unit. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.3109/13561820.2012.699479 this leads to disrupted routines: https://www.jstor.org/stable/3094828?seq=1
4. Be approachable. Familiarize yourself with the team. Introduce yourself, your role. To everyone. If time allows, conduct a mini huddle to introduce the whole team EACH shift. 5/ #COVID19
5. Qualitative data we’ve collected from 4 ICUs in Michigan (paper in progress) suggest that knowing one another, and each other’s name is REALLY important to effective teamwork. 6/ #COVID19
6. Be clear. Communication is fundamental! https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4113012/ see also: @mmanojlo her work here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=manojlovich+m 7/ #COVID
7. Be intentional. MDs – goal set with team. provide guidance to RNs about what is most important for this patient or group of patients, EACH shift. 8/ #COVID19
8. Be intentional. Coordinate. MDs – if you need to assess a patient off sedation, coordinate w/RN when care clustered so all can assess together. RNs – let MDs know your plan + ask what they need. @Emily_Boltey https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30856524 + https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/cogs.12009 9/ #COVID19
9. Be kind. To yourself, your colleagues, your patients. Your emotional response to this situation is normal. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6207112/ 10/ #COVID19
http://10.Be open. Learn from your colleagues. Follow other professions. RNs: @reepRN @coffeeNCalibers @jendazy1969 MDs: @iwashyna @virenkaul @dina_khateebDO @gretchemaben PharmD: @SICUPharmD Check out @virenkaul list of MANY others to follow 11/ #COVID19
