Tonight I’m going to talk about the shoot I did with the amazing Fatin Feisal, at an abandoned urban residential area. This was from 2016, if I’m not mistaken.
This shot was taken right after we got into the area. After this shot, an old man walked behind Fatin out of nowhere. He then walked up the stairs, and went inside one of the abandoned apartments.

Fatin and I were both like, “wtf.”
We then went around up a floor, and found this apartment. One room was just covered with piles of empty medicine bottles (left pic, behind Fatin). We’re talking hundreds of empty bottles and boxes. On the wall (right pic) was one single piece of Christmas decoration.

Again, WTF
One apartment had this striking red wall. So I had Fatin stand against it, and I got some great shots.

When we went out, we saw on the door, the phrase “siapa buka akan dirasuk,” written with chalk.

phrase translation: “whoever enters will be possessed”
I can’t find the original pic in my google drive, but here’s from bruneian synthwave musician Ziller’s Soundcloud.

He asked me if he could use the pic as the cover page for his single Gore.
Speaking of Ziller, he had lent me his Rolleiflex analog camera for a week, so I brought it with me to the shoot.

The first pic came out ‘glitchy’. Not 100% sure how, but I loved it. And the pics came out looking a little dreamlike too!
This shot I basically just told Fatin to pose there while I ran up the stairs to the first floor so I could get her in the middle of the lower third, surrounded by greenery.

I wanted her dark colours to stand out against everything else around her.
this one is me indulging in my love for parallel and perpendicular lines, and just general geometry.

Also, all the different textures in one photo!

Had to be really careful where we were stepping on while setting up this shot.
I love stairs.

Taking pictures on the stairs is a staple. Gives you lots of angles to work with, and lots of geometry. The model also has more flexibility in posing, using levels, rails, etc.
The shoot overall was really fun, weird things aside.

Fatin’s keen to do more shoots, but I think she swore off abandoned places after this shoot.
