"By killing corona virus, we should not kill democracy and fundamental rights in Europe" - this was the main message of Commission VP @VeraJourova who gave me an interview about democracy in times of crisis. I asked if she thinks Hungary is still a democracy:
She said: “This is a tricky question and I will not give you a direct answer. We will have to wait and see how the increased emergency emergency powers of the gov are applied. So far the Hungarian emergency law is comparable with other laws in EU. "
She added "there is low confidence towards Orbán, so the EU remains vigilant." On why the Commission's first reax on HU emergency law was so soft: "I want to do my job with full responsibility, but not becoming any kind of activist, who will somehow go beyond the competences. “
"Those who does not understand why we need to keep values maybe they will understand the language of money once there will be a connection between rule of law and EU payouts. "
"Pandemics is a game changer in many ways but I for rule of law we have to come back to the old normal. We had and we have still the best system which we have ever invented for the society. Extraordinary regimes do not mean that we are stepping outside the democracy.”
She sees no data protection issues for GSM-tracking of the pandemics given "that people give specific informed consent. And these tools must not be with us forever, because these are specific measures for emergency period. “
On fake news she said "We saw very intensive production of disinformation from pro-Kremlin circles and it remains now over the current crisis. We see the propaganda amplified now against the EU. "
