Thing with this and @Freedland 's nonsense this morning is that it throws into sharp relief the fact that reporters / journalists are to a large extent the gatekeepers of progress. 1/? https://twitter.com/GarNob/status/1248005996468826112
Freedland's article is a genuine exemplar of the genre. Only now, he believes, is the need apparent for everything he's calling for. Any mammal with a head knows this is nonsense, and has been for years... 2/?
Further, these epiphanies are particularly galling given that these two, and many others now 'seeing the light', have actively campaigned (and campaigned is the right word here) against a Labour party - leadership and membership at least, if not the PLP... 3/?
Who've wanted this for years. Therefore there are three not mutually exclusive conclusions we can draw from this: 1) that their epiphanies are performative and insincere; 2) that their epiphanies are limited to the duration of this crisis and 3)...4/?
That they see themselves as the arbiters not only of what society needs but also *when it can have it* and *who can deliver it*. The arrogance of this is frankly offensive, but is born from a view that only their opinion matters due to the platform they are given. 5/?
Not only that, of course, but also the grubbier end of life, i.e. Money. The Guardian is institutionally tax avoidy, and the BBC has spent years trying to offload its 'talent' into tax avoidance schemes, to the detriment of some... 6/? https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-england-50211704
All of which a Labour govt under Corbyn would have ended. Lastly there is of course basic snobbery. Corbyn was no academic, as is widely known. All he is is a good bloke who wants to look out for others. For the commentariat, that's never enough. 7/?
They'll only allow progress if it comes from someone they deem to be acceptable to them, intellectually, ideologically, and morally. That this ends up with no progress and indeed regression tells its own story. 8/?
So let's not count on this sentiment persisting. By the time this crisis is past this lot will revert back to telling us why we can't have this or that. Bollocks to their ersatz revelations. 9/9
