There’s a good chance my MMA fandom has reached its course. It’s been a gradual thing, but in the past year especially I’ve scaled down my consumption massively. It has the most toxic & uninformed fan base of any sport I’ve ever followed —which is saying something, since I’ve...
Been watching football and boxing for as long as I can remember— and I’m not sure how that’s ever going to change when by and large the people who run the sport and the people who compete in the sport are almost certainly even more toxic than said fan base. It’s getting harder...
& harder to root for fighters: it seems like every other day one of your favourites comes out in support of Trump or Putin or Kadyrov or has signed with Ali Abdelaziz etc etc. I do enough of picking lesser evils in my life, whether that be voting for a lesser evil or otherwise
I don’t want to have to do that when I’m looking for fun & entertainment, but when the biggest fight in MMA history can be boiled down to “trump supporter vs kadyrov supporter” & you take into account that those things may not even be the worst thing about them, it says a lot.
It’s gotten to the point where I dont really want to become attached to new up & coming fighters or root for them because I’m just waiting for the moment when it gets revealed that they’re a piece of shit, which seems to happen at some point more often than not.
And then even with the fighters that are worth it, to see those good guys, the likes of Dustin Poirier, go out & take ridiculous punishment against, Gaethje & Khabib (both of whom rank highly on the POS index) for less than 300K...
When perennial rule flouters —the Mcgregor, Jones & DCs— are making money hand over fist & rarely ever tasting anything remotely resembling the full brunt of the disciplinary action they deserve, it gets harder and harder to justify supporting the structures that allow...
These miscarriages of justice to take place. The UFC staging fights on a secret island in the middle of a pandemic is as despicable as it is asinine. Any fighter who takes part is at best a complete idiot with no regard for the possible consequences of their actions.
You shouldn’t be ashamed of your fandom, you should be proud of it, but how can you be proud to be a fan of the “sport” where this is happening? Personally, i’m mortified.
I won’t be watching any of these cards or fights, I won’t be consuming any event coverage. For the time being my MMA fandom is on hold, and I can’t say with any real certainty whether it will ever resume.

End.
