TV, ENTERTAINMENT & PROPAGANDA

Watching television is not as entertaining and comforting as it once was. I find myself returning to old favourites such as Friends and re-watching them over and over again.

This is a thread.

1. Shows that I grew up with, while I am sure was a propaganda tool as well, as that was original intent of television, does not seem to be as politicised as television (and movies) today.

2. I was watching the latest season of the Spanish hit Netflix show, Money Heist with my husband, and rolled my eyes with all the ‘politically correct’ plots and characters: a gay couple, feminist agenda, LGBT, anti-Muslim.

3. How could a show’s plot remain believable and enjoyable when it has to include so much propaganda i.e. a gay character, a black & Asian character, a pregnant workaholic bossy of a woman, a trans-sexual, a power couple, a villain wearing a turban and the sound of the ‘athan’ ?

4. TV force us to accept ‘new norms’:women need to behave like men to be ‘powerful’, society must accept gays, lesbians & transsexuals, a family could form single-handedly through surrogacy & sperm donation, Muslims are ‘the other’ in the global society.

5. I don’t find as much joy in watching television and movies these days as I used to before. I recognise the propaganda being presented to us, and I cannot help but roll my eyes and groan.
