I'm in the shelter-in-place a few more weeks camp. But I would urge you all not to dismiss the concerns of those who want to open the economy sooner rather than later. Consider South Georgia…
After Hurricane Michael went through, federal aid dragged out, farms collapsed, and businesses shuttered. There has been a huge spike in suicides, addiction, etc. The human toll of economic destruction wound up being worse than the hurricane's physical destruction.
I think we do have to stay home a bit longer. When random hospitals are having to build field hospitals, there is clearly something different with this virus. It is overwhelming capacity in ways the flu does not.
But this is not sustainable. There needs to be a plan. Even if we can't go 10 miles, but can go down the street to the neighborhood coffee shop or restaurant — this is not sustainable much longer.
