The Kilkee Chamber has declared that this is “one or two idiotic & attention seeking individuals”.

Two things:

1. They’re obviously not seeking attention for themselves as nobody knows who did it

2. They’re definitely seeking attention about staying away: mission accomplished https://twitter.com/limerick_leader/status/1248219496700989441
Let’s push the threat to property aside for a moment

If you travel to your holiday home this weekend, in Kilkee or elsewhere, you’re a potential disease vector

No, I don’t care if you’re not coughing - restricting people to their own area is the entire point of curve-flattening
If you go on a little holiday in the middle of a virus-containment effort, you are putting everyone at risk.

If you go on a little holiday in the middle of a virus-containment effort, you are a fucking muppet.
There are plenty of issues around the purchase of second homes in holiday areas - it pushes up the price of housing for regular residents, it creates a social death zone in those areas outside of holiday season, etc.

Fundamentally, holiday home owners are guests in localities.
As a guest in a locality (yes, even if you’ve paid over the odds for your seaview house), you have a duty of care to people who live in that locality the whole year round.

You don’t get to rock up in your SUV as a potential disease vector mid-pandemic.
Councillors complaining that’s they’re having to deal with the flak from this: well, that’s part of your job, chum.

As a coastal & rural elected representative, you don’t get bothered by the press that often.

You are an elected representative of the people who vote there.
Do I think that anyone’s planning to burn out a few holiday homes because people have turned up in breach of the 2km rule?

No.

But if it gets a few people to be less fuckwittish, it’s done its job, hasn’t it.
People are scared because of coronavirus. They’re scared for themselves, for their neighbours, for at-risk friends and for their ageing relatives.

They are willing to use any tool at their disposal to stop other people being completely irresponsible during a pandemic.
This would not be an issue at all if people were prepared to do the responsible thing and comply with the perfectly reasonable and understandable guidelines to contain covid-19.

Stay within 2k of your home if you can & be responsible. It’s not rocket science.
Most importantly in this thread, if you have a holiday home miles away from where you live, don’t go there until this is all over.

Both holidays and holiday homes can wait until after covid-19 has been contained, you absolutely selfish twazzocks.
