I cannot for the life of me understand the logic of those who see how lethargic and slow govts were to deal with a core government function like a pandemic, and conclude “after this, we need a much more interventionist government across the economy in normal times.”
Show me a man who thinks the crisis justifies a “new social settlement” or a “rethink of relations between the market and the state” and you’ve found an ideologue. Don’t get me wrong, this crisis highlights legion govt failures. But it doesn’t justify implementing all my ideas.
