Okay okay, I didn’t want to comment into this until I was sure I truly understood what was going on. I’d like to believe that she doesn’t know or understand the history behind blackface and what it represents, otherwise she wouldn’t have done such a disgraceful act towards black- https://twitter.com/ninahwildin/status/1248218193207930880
-people. Most people such as myself at first, don’t know that “white performers first started painting their faces black to mock enslaved Africans in minstrel shows across the United States. It was racist and offensive then, and it's still racist and offensive today”.
As a performer myself I’m actually quite ashamed and disappointed to say the least for not knowing the in-depth history behind the entire concept. “Blackface isn't just about painting one's skin darker or putting on a costume. It invokes a racist and painful history”.
White performers darkened their skin with polish and cork, put on tattered clothing and exaggerated their features to look stereotypically "black”. The performances were intended to be funny to white audiences but to the black community, they were demeaning and hurtful.
Such negative representations of black people left a damaging legacy in popular culture, especially in art and entertainment which is why the ignorance displayed by Tina should be called out and corrected. Gongwe o batla to be sat down and taught like a small child in order to
-understand the severity of what she has done. I don’t think that when she constructed that caption that’s she even knew what blackface is. She definitely tried to be smart and make a point but unfortunately for her she went about it the wrong way.
Also she shouldn’t be putting off people that are trying to show her how she is wrong for it. As I mentioned above, that’s just plain ignorance and disrespect. I hope that this was educational 🙏🏽
