I remember bristling at the idea of people not voting in 2016 on principle, because it was a lot easier to be angry at generally like-minded people than it was to acknowledge how broken our democracy is. 1/
From the nonsensical primary calendar and nomination process to the electoral college favoring rural, traditionally conservative areas, it doesn& #39;t feel like our voices matter. But when someone says that out loud, THEY& #39;RE the problem? 2/
It doesn& #39;t have to be this way. It really doesn& #39;t. Bernie spoke loudly about that and so did Warren to a degree, and somehow we ended up with a candidate who brings literally nothing new to the table and performs terribly in debates. 3/
(Honestly, it& #39;s sad/hilarious seeing how people "sticking up" for Biden truly can& #39;t point to a policy, only insisting he& #39;s better than Trump, which is...truly the lowest bar) 4/
As a sexual assault survivor who works for a nonprofit focused on ending sexual violence, I get it now. Pointing fingers at non-voters is just another way to shift blame from people in power for putting us in this position. 5/
It also reminds me of how much easier it was to paint Trump supporters as uneducated working-class folks than acknowledge the wealthy and college-educated people who support him and happily uphold white supremacy. 6/
The Democrats coalesced around Biden right after outlets said the race was "Bernie& #39;s to lose." It was never going to be easy, but it is hard to chalk those moves up to anything but desperation to cling to existing power. 7/
(Also, let us not forget that 53% of white women voters voted for Trump, so we white women can stop pretending to have all the answers here. The system has generally served us.) 8/
If you find yourself desperate for confirmation from progressives that they will vote blue, I invite you to sit in that discomfort. 9/
We have a long road ahead and no single candidate was ever going to save us, but goddammit if Bernie and the movement uplifting him didn& #39;t give me hope for real change. The struggle continues.
