Q: How long should a woman wait before sex and pregnancy after a myomectomy (Fibroid surgery)?

A: Sex: You need to heal. You can do it when YOU are ready after 6 weeks. Very gently

We encourage partners to be understanding. The woman has to be emotionally and physically ready. Also understand that every woman’s medical history and healing process is unique. So, sex should be at her own time. And it should be gentle.

A2: About pregnancy. You might need to wait 3-6 months for the womb to heal. I’d advise a minimum of 6 months and a max of 24 months.

It’s also important to speak to your Dr, who understands the type & nature of surgery you had. Recovery rates differ/procedure

Why wait for the womb to heal?
Just like in a CS, the womb needs some “Me-time”before pregnancy.

A short myomectomy-pregnancy interval may increase risk of adhesions
miscarriage, preterm birth, abnormal placentation, cesarean section, and uterine rupture.

Hysterectomy?
We won’t forget that some fibroid surgeries end up with the removal of the womb, maybe due the extent of damage or to save.

In this case, parenthood is still possible with adoption or surrogacy for persons who are yet to have a child.

What to do post surgery?
- Talk to your Dr about your concerns and discuss suitable contraceptive options for you
- Rest
- Eat healthy. Lots of Fruits and Vegetables. Boost your immunity. Vitamins, e.g “C” help faster wound healing
- Get ready to be a badass mum
