Just caught up on @Keir_Starmer's interview with @Peston from last night. It was disappointing:

- He said antigen tests only useful for getting frontline workers back to work. That's not true. They can be used to test-and-trace, a possible 'exit strategy' from lockdown (1/ )
- He wouldn't explain why Austria, Denmark are already able to consider loosening lockdown. It's because they acted quickly to enter a lockdown, limiting community transmission. Surely that should be an example of why scrutiny necessary? (2/ )
- Finally, and this was a real missed open goal. He refused to say that companies receiving vast bailouts shouldn't be paying dividends to shareholders, instead saying this all needs to be reviewed. (3/ )
What is the strategy here? As opposition leader @Keir_Starmer can afford to be clear and explain the trade off of policy choices to the public. Instead, his fear of seeming to "oppose for opposition's sake" means he is just as evasive as the government. (4/ )
Something @Keir_Starmer seems to have misunderstood: "scrutiny" doesn't just require asking open questions, it also requires putting forward alternative paths. There is only pressure to reconsider a policy choice when an alternative is provided.
