THREAD Now is the time to generate a ferocious debate on the future shape of Wales; the economic and cultural context driving popular discontent with democratic norms. To move away from the focus on “don't rock the boat” and technocratic minutiae.
A starter for ten below which barely scraps the surface. Over to you.
Reject “cake and eat it economics”. You can’t keep pushing for Scandinavian public services with US levels of taxation. Sort out social care in Wales by funding through a new tax/insurance levy. Helps the NHS and ends the most pernicious means test in the welfare state 1/10
End debates about the national minimum wage. Look for ways to make labour markets less insecure. Tackle the growing disparities in income and wealth; the privileges of the elderly and rich. Policies until such as universal basic income and wealth taxes, should be introduced 2/10
Start the policy development to move towards a 4-day working week to improve productivity and wellbeing. Flexible digital working should become the norm. Offices should become museums. 3/10
Sustainable infrastructure for use by all. Build the £50m Crucible South Wales Heritage Project in Merthyr. Reconnect the “Mon and Brec’ Canal as a linear green park. It does not require any CPOs en-route. We just need to stop building more retail development in Newport. 4/10
Wales should lobby to abandon HS2. You can get to London in a second with Zoom. Spread the ÂŁ106bn around the country. EG the construction cost of the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon is ÂŁ1.3bn. The Secretary of State for Wales pay should be performance related or the post abolished. 5/10
On March 27th in response to Covid 19 it was announced that all rough sleepers in England 'to be housed'. Why does it take a pandemic to sort this out? Eradicating homelessness should be achieved in Wales. Rolling out green affordable housing should be Wales’s trademark. 6/10
Reach accord on the Rewilding debate between farmers and environmentalists. As the growth of plant protein-based foods develops land occupied by livestock can be released for multipurpose uses. But protect the language, ensure the future of the countryside & food supply.7/10
For social capital value the “main course not the dessert’. So-called “low skilled workers” have turned the word on its head. In terms of added value recognise them not vacuous celebrities singing “Imagine” from gated mansions. Who cares about Oscars and BAFTAs anymore? 8/10
The central premise of a new approach is simple: Mike Berniers Lee calls it “Enoughness” The goal of economic activity should be about meeting the core needs of all but maximizes the means of those who have the least. https://twitter.com/markjhooper/status/1247783717411553281 9/10
Max Weber wrote that the task of politics “is to look at the realities of life with an unsparing gaze, to bear these realities and be ready for them inwardly”. No permission is required to have this debate. Its time for Wales to be a nation of nonconformists again 10/10
