That moment when a mom turns her child away. Or only brings her near for your blessing. Either because you are the 'evil' eye or to ward off the 'evil' eye. How hard is it to see us & everyone else as human beings? (1/2)
I understand the contexts in which many of us have to conflate, be silent, take what we get, compromise & live with the world because what alternative do we have? (2/2)
A lot is grounded in caste, class based prejudices & certain ways of otherising.
The first experience of wearing a saree was being asked to bless. I said I can't. But I will not look down upon it because many many trans persons have to survive by that. (3/n)
This world which thinks it can 'save' persons by handing them a small money, which has little/no scope for older people, looks down upon sex work, powerless outrageous laws intended to only control (4/n)
where persons who have fought all their life & to finally find some ark to hold on, & you are saying we abandon all that & let go of some sense of stability? For what? (5/n)
I am not interested in romanticizing poverty or pain. But if you or anyone is interested actually in trans, queer persons' rights, be an ally, support our rights, reflect on how gender, caste, class effects your lives instead of only asking us. (6/n)
And stop tracing our rights to be based only on histories, stories & mythologies. You want to read about them, share them, your choice. But our rights should seriously be based on Constitution, human rights, social justice, structures & concepts. (7/n)
You want to critique or criticise how that can be limiting, great. But I am tired of reading judgments which talk more of a past story, than of homelessness, discrimination, skewed representation, lack of accountability in the present & what can be done for future etc. (8/n)
Also to many cis gay savarna men, one suggestion- stop being only bothered about marriage rights.
that is important, but what about caste prejudices, being thrown out of homes, not able to find houses, medicalised violence? (9/n)
Colonial era laws ko bahar phekna hai toh why not sedition? And yes very comfortably sitting with afspa, preventive detention laws?
Or if that is not the case, just remind yourself & everyone that 377 was the only fight & end it. (10/n)
Also what about jobs? Employment? Partner rights, paternity rights se battle khatam? Entrenched attitudes in smaller firms, businesses as well as in large ones- when is that going to go? How many of these have gender-neutral washrooms? (11/n)
Many hardly survive schools, even fewer make it and survive higher education- what is the plan there? (12/n)
The trigger for this thread was me talking to a friend, who kept being classist, casteist & said we need right to marriage. That's the immediate next goal. When asked on other things, "what about them?" sorry was angry. (13/n).
