Did some volunteer work with my church after Winston and will never forget the day we went to Ra. At a village whose name I can vaguely remember, we were met with a scene of total destruction.
Mind you, this was 2 days after Winston. What truly hit home was this old lady who sat under a roofing iron propped up with a stick, amidst the remains of her home.
As I needed her, I could hear her singing. When I got closer, I could then make out the words of the song:
Au sa lomani
Au sa lomani
Au sa lomani
Au reki ka'u marau
Yes! Jesus loves me
Yes! Jesus loves me
Yes! Jesus loves me
The Bible tells me so
Au sa lomani
Au sa lomani
Au reki ka'u marau
Yes! Jesus loves me
Yes! Jesus loves me
Yes! Jesus loves me
The Bible tells me so
With tears in my eyes, I tried to just leave the carton of goods I had with me by her little shed and hurry away. Suddenly I felt a gruo of steel over my hand. I turned to see her gazing at me. Then she said
"A yau levu taudua a solia mai na Kalou na noda bula, nai karua na loloma, nai katolu na vakavinavinaka. Au sa kalougata niu sa na donuia tolutolu nai yau edai"
'God gave us 3 great gifts. First is life, second is love and third be gratitude. I am blessed to have realise all these today
She gave me a hug and comforted me cause you best believe I was crying like a child. As I walked away she said
'Luvequ, nanuma tikoga na loloma. Ke sega, ko tu wale'
'Child, remember to love. If not, you are worthless'
'Luvequ, nanuma tikoga na loloma. Ke sega, ko tu wale'
'Child, remember to love. If not, you are worthless'
As we left the village, I will never forget this little white haired lady waving her handkerchief as we went around the bend who not only taught but showed me what resilience, faith and love truly meant.
