Just watched @randemtweets talking about fitting MYST on a CD, and having to worry about physical layout on a CD. It's an amazing thing to have to deal with, much like earlier hgenerations had to worry about individual bytes of memory.
Myst, and especially Riven, made me think "I want to make games" more than doom, etc ever did. What I ended up being good at doing was not really useful for such tasks, and the business of game dev seems to be awful for ICs so maybe that's for the better...
...but a lot of my *learning* was born out of the desire to do fun things with computer graphics, even though nothing I do these days touches on it, and even at the time most of what I did involved much lower level concepts...
I'm sure there was a point when I started this thread but I'm about to sleep so I'll use that as an excuse. I think the critical aspect is: I'm glad I've never needed to worry about individuals bytes, or performance of immutable shipped data structures.
