My piece. In urban areas 50% of Muslims are in self employment jobs (compared to 33% Hindus). These are the Muslim fruit sellers, truckers, vendors who have been barred from entering colonies or beaten/harassed in recent days. If this discrimination 1/4 https://theprint.in/opinion/covid-an-excuse-to-push-indian-muslims-out-of-informal-sector-jobs-apartheid-the-next-step/398236/?amp&__twitter_impression=true">https://theprint.in/opinion/c...
becomes widespread, the consequences would be devastating.Muslims are already systematically excluded from formal sector & even regular wage jobs. Self employment is often the last resort to earn a livelihood. Also, pyschologically, Hindus & Muslims already inhabit two different
different worlds- ideas, thoughts, feelings. Years of propoganda has meant a large of Hindus are willing to believe the most outlandish about Muslims. Muslims have becoming increasingly distrustful of the State. (both ot which we have seen during this corona crisis)
In many cities, Hindus and Muslims reside in separate areas. Economic ties are often the only thinking binding the two communities to each other. If these are snapped, we are looking at a situation of two nations living side by side, in mutual incomprehension and mistrust.
This comment has got 170 likes in an hour lol. Kind of the point of the article. A significant section of people are ready to break off economic ties. If this becomes widespread, it would be beyond the capacity of govt to control it, even if they wanted to https://mobile.twitter.com/rose_k01/status/1248142128250675200">https://mobile.twitter.com/rose_k01/...
