1) Stigma kills.
I'm very worried about the impact of covid19 on drug users.
Drug use in society is wide, most without problem with no ill effects of the current lockdown period of covid enforced abstinence. Some may be in severe withdrawal for the 1st time.
2) The UK already has record drug deaths, a third of all drug deaths in Europe, an evolving market could amplify that rapidly. The lockdown makes it difficult to buy & sell drugs, shops are also shut, so funding drugs may lead to increased harmful exploitation and debt bonds
3) These new dynamics create risks, I'm proud to have helped hostels share drug tolerance policies, where the most vulnerable people can safely maintain treatment and seek help. This experience should be a step towards the evidence base for future supervised injecting facilities.
4) Drugs are also alcohol, suddenly stopping can be severe. The availability/access of drugs may change but the addiction doesn't just disappear. Drug testing, assessment of use & credible education is key, without the stigma attached which often prevents someone seeking change
5) Enforced abstinence in this way may work for a few but can be incredibly dangerous to others. Particularly with the risk of relapse in a volatile market.
The impact of covid19 on the drugs market is being constantly assessed by police academia health to protect all communities
6) How can you recover from a condition which you didn't know you have? This is a time for positive change and compassionate support, not harmful stigma. Increased isolation and marginalisation are factors in recovery, this is a difficult time for many..
