Getting really frustrated with all of the "WHAT ABOUT THE EMPLOYEES" I've seen in response to this tbh.

I worked at Walmart for 9 fucking years, and if there's one thing I know, it's that if a corporation is looking to cut hours/fire someone, they'll find a reason. https://twitter.com/SweetBeans99/status/1247939201183543296
Maybe there should be regulations to protect laborers from shitty corporate practices to keep from losing profit.

Because that's exactly what it is. Losing profit. They can *easily* afford to eat loss from theft, it's like nothing to them. They just don't want to get less profit
Hourly employees (that aren't AP) aren't even allowed to do anything about theft other than find their manager, because liability would be far more costly than actually stopping theft. They DON'T. GIVE. A. SHIT.
I literally lost my job because they didn't want to pay us the overnight differential we'd been getting to work at night, so now they're working with fewer people during busier hours.

Just to save a buck.
For a while we'd had our hours cut so that the store would have a higher profit margin ending the quarter, and was told "Oh but you'll get a bigger bonus!"

Yeah, that extra $100 really made up for getting half of my hours for a month or two. Totally was just for our benefit.
Sure, there's theft for essential things like food that is always important, but "Think about the employees!" in response to theft as a general idea is just "Think of the children!" with a boot-flavored coating of Cheeto dust.
You know what I did get in trouble for?

Not hitting my "times."

Not killing myself even harder to hit some mystical number that a computer decided I should be able to do my job in, while my bosses were paid far more than me to not think about reality and yell at me to go faster
Spending time following around people because they were potentially stealing put me in far more trouble than any amount of theft, because it dug into the profit they were making off of me slowly killing my body.

Not that working harder ever gave me more than a marginal benefit.
