This is a thread about why you should support @DebKilroy campaign to send soap into every prison
Social distancing, washing your hands & cleaning surfaces with anti-bacterial products are some of the measures that public health officials are encouraging people to use to prevent the spread of Covid-19. These are options that our men and women in prison may struggle to employ.
Based on personal experience of imprisonment in this country and the fact that we are not aware of what robust sanitation protocols, if any, the prison have instituted, we continue to be desperately concerned for men, women and children in custody right now.
During my time in AWP, the cakes of soap that were provided were made communal in areas of the prison, such as mainstream units, meaning we all shared the one cake of soap.
In other areas you could get your own cake of soap if you asked an officer. Whether this was provided was up to the individual officer at the time.
Officers use the artificial arbitrary power they're given by the state to determine who should get what & when. Women in prison in the middle of a pandemic cannot afford to have to rely on an officer’s appropriate and fair application of their powers, or
their discretional authority. And most women locked up right now may not be able to afford the very expensive Dove cake of soap on the canteen buy
We need assurances that every man, woman and child in prison right now, has access to their own bar of soap, and more as they require it.
I want to make clear that nothing I ever do will contribute to the extension of the carceral state, but I am committed to supporting men and women still trapped inside to stay safe and make it home to family.
If need be I will send in a hundred cakes of soap, but I would like assurances they will reach the hands of the men and women that need them.
And I want every bureaucrat that looks on justice involved citizens as disposable people to know that their brothers and sisters on the outside will not watch on quietly as our people inside die…
we will raise our voices and our fists in the air, and say its time – it’s time to free us all. We don’t have the death sentence in Australia – but we sure as hell will if we don’t start to empty the cages.
