not to be a tellius fan on main but almedha is such an interesting and tragic character
LIKE i feel like some ppl dislike her bc they see her as a smothering neurotic mother (and interestingly in the text itself, MULTIPLE ppl from izuka to tibarn comment on her lack of stability which usually isnt smth u rlly. See spoken) but like...
i think its necessary to go further into her character and look at WHY shes so bereft like. presumably the reason why she left goldoa in the first place was a need to be free and express her differing opinions freely which i think is rather sympathetic,,, dheginseas no tyrant but
i do think that hes got a bit of a chokehold on Most Things in goldoa,,, whether his or almedhas ideals are More Correct cant rlly be debated, considering how little we actually know abt almedhas ideals (just that she believed in dragons partaking in extranational conflicts)
one could call her rash, but it makes SENSE for her to want to leave if she felt her freedom was being encroached on,,, so she left to find something different and she found ashnard and fell in love with his grand ambition, which was smth completely opposite to what she had been
trying to get away from when she left goldoa,,, but this is where everything just Falls Down. in goldoa, she didnt have her freedom of opinion, but she had relative comfort and her family. in daein, she had freedom, but only for as long as ashnard deemed her useful to him
additionally i think ppl dont address the fact that she cant transform anymore very much?? like... assuming that she WAS as hot blooded as shes often characterized i feel like thatd be like. a big part of her identity and smth rlly important to her, and then its just. gone
theres such a sense of BEREAVEMENT to almedha and its bc she had her brother, her baby, and her identity ripped away from her and was cast out with nothing like. she lost SO MUCH and she spent 20 whole years looking for her son!!! 20 whole years!!!!
and the damnedest thing is that she blames herself for it,,, i Always think abt the dragons base convo like. shes so so desperate for ena to blame her for rajaions death and to hate her,,, its easy to see that she blames herself for everything despite most of it being the result
of ashnards actions,, i think this sense of self-blame and grief can help to contextualize how she acts in General like she smothers pelleas with affection bc of the sense of relief and joy at finding her son, yes, but perhaps also out of a sense of guilt for not having
been there for him to raise him with love. smth smth dheginsea is not a very affectionate parent smth smth. ANYWAY LIKE... after all shes been through and lost, i cant say i necessarily blame her for clinging so hard to the one thing she was able to regain in her eyes, even to
the unhealthy degree that she does,, i think nearly all the dragons are, in the end, more bound to their interpersonal loyalties than anything else, which makes sense bc to a dragon, the least transient thing in the world would be another dragon. ANYWAYi think almedha has a lot
of interesting nuance to her and shes an incredibly tragic character who sometimes just gets seen as a Crazy Mom like.... theres so much to her and i love her!!! i want her to be Happy thank u
