Prince used to come to movies at the theater I worked at (Uptown Theater in Minneapolis). Every time was the same: someone would call and ask about the showtimes, then:

“He would like to attend the 7:35 show.”

“Okay,” I’d respond.

“He would like to reserve the balcony.”

“I’m sorry,” 19 year old me would say, “we don’t reserve the balcony”.

(The Uptown is the last single-screen movie theater in the Twin Cities with a balcony, and people love it. It’s common for early shows to have more people sitting in the balcony than the main floor)

“That’s fine.” said the voice on the other end, and hung up.

60 min before the show, an impeccably dressed large gentleman would show up at the box office, say “I am here to purchase his four tickets.”

Money was exchanged, he would walk in, and wait inside the side door.

He would just stand there and wait as the previous show let out, patrons would leave, we’d clean the auditorium, and let folks into the next show.

The lights would go down, the trailers would begin, and finally as the feature started, the auditorium doors would close.

Then, without a phone call or a page, or even a knock, the big guy who bought the tickets would open the heavy steel side door, and in would come Prince, a lady, and another, even bigger, guy.

New bodyguard would open the side door from the lobby to the auditorium.

Prince and his date would sit in the second from the back row, right side of the auditorium. Nobody would normally sit back there unless close to a sellout.

The first bodyguard stood outside the door, the second was in the auditorium, standing in the far back corner.
