Thread on the Indian National Congress/INC: loosely adapted from Democrats and Dissenters.
The INC has had a bit of a rough couple decades, from leading the Freedom struggle to staring into the abyss of semi-irrelevance against the BJP. How did this happen?

The INC has had a bit of a rough couple decades, from leading the Freedom struggle to staring into the abyss of semi-irrelevance against the BJP. How did this happen?
PART 1:Beginnings
Let's start from the beginning in 1885. In the subsequent decades, the INC built branches across the Raj ,with strongholds especially in Bengal in Eastern India with figures such as Surendranath Bannerjee and Bipin Chandra Pal, both known for opposing the partition of Bengal.
Another Stronghold was in Maharashtra with the most recognizable figures being the Radical Bal Gangadhar Tilak and the Moderate Gopal Krishna Gokhale. The main difference was in how to achieve Independence, either through agitation against or co-operation with the British.
One morbidly funny mode of contention is their clash over the age of consent
. Gokhale along with other reformers sought to support a British raise of consenting age from 10->12. This was opposed by Tilak who believed self rule must be achieved first over every other issue.

North & South India also had their share of figures such as Lala Lajpat Rai, a Nationalist figure who died of wounds suffered after a beating by police and V.O Chidambaram Pillai in Tamil Nadu who founded a indigenous Shipping company and was a labor activist and union organizer.
Lala, Bipin, and Bal were informally known as "Lal Bal Pal" ,a triumvirate of Nationalists who embraced a more assertive nationalism based on Swadeshi, or "Self Reliance" and Swaraj, or "Self Rule". , their star rose as anger over the partition of Bengal was widespread.
At this point in the early 20th century, (1910s or so) the INC was 'a genuinely national organization' still divided on the question of strategy. The Surat Split between Moderates and Radicals in 1907 had left the Radicals weakened as Tilak was jailed and Bipin Pal had retired.
I'll end this Thread on a quote by Tilak,
"Religion and practical life are not different. The real spirit is to make the country your family instead of working only for your own. The step beyond is to serve humanity and the next step is to serve God."

I got ahead of myself so i'll end part one of this thread here but I think this would be of interest for
