What are important & effective mitigating factors in COVID?

1st, what is "a mitigating factor" in medicine?

It's something that has the effect of making something bad less severe, serious, or painful.

They won't cure or eliminate the bad thing.
2 The idea of social distancing as an effective mitigating factor in the spread of illnesses during epidemics & pandemics started a long time ago.

Social distancing also started appearing in fashion as a mitigating factor to unwanted social contact. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=14&v=u1bGBV54clU&feature=emb_logo
3 "...fashion can play an important role in...social distancing, whether the space created helps solve a health crisis or keep away pesky suitors."

"..large, voluminous skirts.. in the mid-19th century, was used to create a barrier between the genders.."

4 And fashionable PPE has been around for a while.

"Plague doctors wore masks with a bird-like beak to protect them from being infected by deadly diseases such as the Black Death... they thought disease was spread by miasma, a noxious form of ‘bad air."

5 Social distancing during this pandemic is critical:

"Droplet-spread diseases can be spread by:
• coughing and sneezing
• close personal contact
•contact with an object or surface with viral particles on it and then touching your mouth, nose or eyes."
https://www.health.govt.nz/
7 This is a sciencey article - but a good one to skim- behind how loud voices while talking can spread the virus.

I presume someone shouting, screaming, or laughing out loud can spread it too given that projectile "particle emissions" (spit) can occur. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-019-38808-z
9 "The new coronavirus has upended all of our usual calculus about seemingly ordinary activities."

How safe is:
• walking/running past someone on the street?
• shopping in a grocery store?
• what about packages and takeout? https://www.livescience.com/how-covid-19-spreads-transmission-routes.html
10 For example, New Zealand determined that social distancing was paramount to containing the spread of the lethal virus so they immediately ordered a complete nation-wide lockdown including enforceable, strict social distancing policies.
11 Informed policies & thoughtful leaders plus a lot of community awareness, support & old-fashioned fortitude are paying off in NZ

As of 4/08:
NZ
# of Cases 1,210
# of Deaths 1
% of deaths to cases 0.08%

USA
# of Cases 426,300
# of Deaths 14,622
% of deaths to cases 3.4%
14 Lack of social distancing; indifference to policies, medical advice & evidenced-based science; or Inactions, denials, & delays by people that needlessly spread the lethal virus. are not encouraged or promoted on TV.

15 Science shows social distancing is an effective mitigating factor for COVID. We need rational leadership, time, distance, & good old-fashion American fortitude.

Anger, denial, snake-oil, blame, lies, & bat-shit craziness aren't mitigating factors.

Social distancing may include the use of PPE such as, knowing the proper use of face masks. Masks with social distancing help to further offset the debilitating and lethal effects of the COVID virus.#action=share
17 Modern-day PPE including masks, are essential accouterments to containing COVID.

But shortages of N95 masks have resulted in people making homemade masks.

Modern-day creativity, fashion, form & function merge to fight off another historic pandemic.

After lockdowns are lifted, then what?

Social distancing policies can be changed in a thoughtful stepwise process.

"Substantial & effective scheduling changes that can be made without too much inconvenience (or where the benefits clearly outweigh the costs) might include...
21
"...staggered schedules for workers, including using a 7-day (instead of 5-day) roster

for schools, alternating lunchtimes, & slightly staggering start & finish times of the school day...

longer opening hours for supermarkets, pharmacies & gov't services." (Ref Conversation)

Meanwhile, practice social distancing by staying within "your bubble", wearing masks as needed, and use other evidenced-based measures to curtail this ugly COVID-19 pandemic.
