I just attended my first zoom birthday party and yo...done right/structured thoughtfully, it can actually be a lot of fun.
a few things I think worked really well:

1) the people were dope + brought great energy

2) it topped out at maybe 15-20 people on the call (so you could see everyone's faces in a single panel, as opposed to having to toggle back and forth)

3) there was a fun activity planned!
re: point #3: this was highkey brilliant — rather than trying to recreate a normal party in a virtual environment, it leveraged the fact that party attendees weren't physically in the same space.

my friend's friend sent us on a scavenger hunt in our apartments. hilarity ensued.
okay so one person (not the guest of honor) had come up with a list of things everyone would be sent to find. the facilitator would name an item, give us 45 seconds, and we'd all hurry back with it. I think we did 10 items? https://twitter.com/amandabarrett/status/1248083570654171136?s=20
we started off easy — "a mug with writing on it." "a tablespoon of sugar or flour." leveled up to "a sock filled with $1 in coins." and, fittingly, ended with "a shot of the liquor of your choice."

BUT THEN CAME THE TIEBREAKERS.
since we're a competitive bunch and *needed* a clear, definitive winner, the facilitator solicited suggestions from friends who were out of the running.

surprisingly, we all had a pack of gum. and no one has a printer!

(bae and I lost on "stapler" 😩)
other items that were really funny

1) something retro / from a different era
2) halloween costume
3) "something to play with"
4) something you use during sex

(obvi calibrate appropriately for your friend group / people's varying comfort levels)
also, it was just fun to go searching for random items. one of the items was "a blue shoe." thankfully, bae has blue sneakers. next round, we found out we have nary a clothespin in the house (but neither did anyone else, so...)

point is, the possibilities are endless!
