I've been thinking a lot about Prine today. (I take more time to process than others!) And what I keep coming back to is that most of those memories bring me right back to friends and specific times and places. 1/
to campfires, band rehearsals, car trips, mix tapes / cds, rehearsal dinners, when we saw Prine show in New Haven in '01 or '02... they keep coming... 2/
and nobody introduced a song like Prine. So many gems. I think my favorite is where he says he wrote a song on the way to the gig but worried that it was too complicated, that he might not be able to play it. Then realized backstage that it was the same 3 chords! 3/
and lyric tidbits have been bouncing around my head all day, opening lines, zingers, goofy ones, sad lines, all memorable... 4/
...and then i got fired for bein' scared of bees...
I could be happy as a sardine in a can...
I got kicked off of Noah's ark...
kitchen light fell asleep on the bedroom floor...
we were standing, standing by peaceful waters, whoa-a-oh-a-oh... 5/
Anyway, I needed more than a handful of characters here to reflect on 23 years or so (of mine) of listening, playing, recording, singing, and sharing his music with so many people. You will definitely be missed, John Prine. I hope you're standing by peaceful waters indeed.
