With all of the disagreements occurring as of late regarding "old school" versus "new school" thought in the the game today, I decided to take a look in the mirror and determine where I fell on the spectrum.
Many may be surprised on where I ultimately found myself...

Considering my position at @DrivelineBB, many would assume that I am a part of the "new" baseball community
And yes. I am.
If there is a more efficient and validated method of doing something, I am interested in what it is.
That& #39;s just the way I think...

Yet, my entire baseball experience was built upon "old school" methods and thought.
There is no man who has had more influence on my career than Lloyd Moseby. I was very lucky to learn from him. He was a part of arguably one of the best outfield trios ever...

He is undoubtedly "old school" and made due with the tools he had at his disposal.
Everyday, we would do only two things:
1. Quick Toss (video) - Toss 7 balls to me within ~10 sec. very little instruction - Hit all 7 well? Good. No? He& #39;d laugh at you
2. Live AB& #39;s - He& #39;d pitch

We didn& #39;t have a fancy facility(used a LL cage behind @GraniteBayHigh)
Rain or shine, Lloyd would show up 2 hrs early with his suitcase of used balls, stretch for an hr, then proceed to throw ~80ish mph to me from 55 ft away
He is incredibly competitive and has no remorse...

For those who know him, Lloyd is a one of a kind. He is a great ambassador for the sport (both in the USA and especially Canada) and truly loves the game and teaching it.
Being from Canada, and having little to no knowledge of the sport, I took every word he said as scripture...

When we speak today about my work at @DrivelineBB , he always feels the need to razz me as a part of the "new age"
Yet, the more I think about the principles that drove his training methods and success, I realize that they are not much different than how we see things today...

His two main "training modalities" were incredibly similar to what is promoted today;
1. Utilize a drill/tool to put an athlete in a position where their body needs to naturally organize to achieve a goal within a constraint
2. Train an athlete in their competitive environment
1. Utilize a drill/tool to put an athlete in a position where their body needs to naturally organize to achieve a goal within a constraint
2. Train an athlete in their competitive environment
Back then, these principles were presented through:
1. Quick toss drill
2. Lloyd blowing his arm up trying to embarrass me in a little league cage
While today, they are presented through:
1. @AxeBat Speed Trainers or something similar
2. High speed BP off of a machine

Different tools/methods now? Yes.
Different vocabulary used now? Yes. (i.e. driving the ball vs. LA)
But the truth of the matter is that much of "new" is ultimately built off of the pillars established by the "old"
It is shortsighted to just disregard old ways as archaic...

It is human nature to evolve and push things forward.
While It is also human nature to romanticize about the past.
But the truth is that "age is no guarantee of efficiency and youth is no guarantee of innovation"...

The two together, is where true and lasting positive change is made.
With the experience, knowledge and values of the "old" mixed w/ the strategy and utility of recently developed or discovered tools of the "new", Baseball is in the position to move forward in many positive ways

In the game today, this is no time for caution.
The writing is on the wall. There are new, more efficient ways to go about things.
The one who remains exclusively romantic about the past will become irrelevant
And those who think data/tech answers everything are wrong...

So where do I find myself on the spectrum?
I believe I am pretty in the middle.
There is a great many things to be learned from the generations of successful people who came before us. And there are equally great new methods of solving problems in a more efficient manner...

There will always be disagreement. There will always be misunderstanding. And there will most definitely be "blood" as we go through the growing pains of change and adaptation.
But the game will be better for it. And that& #39;s all I care about
