I can't even find the good expose-style articles I read previously. Looks like there's been proper actual studies on the culture done since then, too.

The best bit is to read the Newsweek et al stories from 2003, about how it's wildly exaggerated, and then scroll up this thread and read the more recent ones (or find them yourselves) that further codify and lock down the idea that: yes this was always very much real.
