WI’s GOP just carried out one of the most egregious acts of voter suppression in modern history. For the past decade+, GOP legislatures and courts have erected numerous barriers to voting, all of which are surgically targeted at working-class, young people, and people of color.
At the risk of stating the obvious, the Left cannot win if the people cannot vote. Until we ensure this fundamental right, which is under assault, all of the organizing, strategizing, and visions for the future that emerged out of Bernie’s campaign will amount to nothing...
... and the Right’s hold on power will only grow stronger. And yet, the issue of voting rights seems of secondary concern on the Left. To take one example: @jacobinmag obin and its podcast @thedigradio (which I like and read/listen to regularly). On the day after the travesty in
WI, there is zero discussion of what went down and its implications on @jacobinmag's website. @thedigradio has never devoted an episode to voting rights. Voting rights is not even included among the 31 topics on its topics drop-down menu. Why is this not the most urgent concern
and top priority of the Left? WI was a warning. The Left needs to put its energy and organizing power into this issue now. If we wait until the Fall, it will be too late. The Right knows how to game the system, and despite the profound unpopularity of their positions,
wields enormous power b/c of this. No matter how much popular support there is for the positions Bernie ran on, if people can’t vote, or if their vote doesn’t matter b/c gerrymandering/electoral college, etc., then his campaign, and this movement, will be in vain.
