The Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau (PHLCVB) is asking @SenBobCasey, @SenToomey, @RepDwightEvans and other members of Congress to include 501(c)(6) organizations (aka, most Convention and Visitors Bureaus) in the expansion of the #CARESAct. https://twitter.com/USTravel/status/1247971501212676099
Hotel room tax accounts for 85% of the PHLCVB's revenue. COVID-19 has resulted in the cancellation of 119 events in Philadelphia which would have generated over 235,000 room nights.
Hotel occupancy in Philadelphia was hovering in the single digits and at least 27 hotels have suspended operations. This means almost no revenue in the form of hotel room tax.
Because of this, we have cut programming and implemented staff furloughs, and we fear that without extending the #PaycheckProtectionProgram to 501(c)(6) organizations many CVBs across Pennsylvania and the country will be peril.
CVBs are an important part of the tourism ecosystem; they bring in business (meetings, conventions, sporting events, leisure travelers) that puts the hospitality industry to work. In Philadelphia, that’s 76,000+ jobs.
Without this important assistance, CVBs will remain severely restricted and hospitality workers will have to wait longer to get back to work, earn a living and support their families.
