Every time I listen to MOTS: 7 lately I am struck with how oddly prescient it is. @BTS_twt has somehow given us the PERFECT album for this #covid19 pandemic and the fear, pain and isolation we are all living in to some degree or another. (A thread)
Thematically, we know MOTS: 7 as an album explores the journey to accept and eventually embrace the darkness and pain that life can bring, and the individual song themes and lyrics take it further, also exploring isolation and being forced to adapt to survive and thrive.
Black Swan: "All moments become eternities" as the singer finds themselves enduring an existence where they are drowning in the "violent waves" of the "silent sea," only to eventually fight to get above the ocean floor and get their head above water.
To me this song powerfully evokes the fear and uncertainty of the first few days of this pandemic as we slowly drew away from each other and retreated into our individual quarantines, understanding with each day the true magnitude of the wave about to hit us.
Filter playfully explores the idea of being pulled out of the boredom of lockdown, finding love/joy in the things & people already dismissed because they are familiar, choosing to be "new each day," to "become a new us." Choosing to put beautiful filter on a boring existence.
My Time has obvious resonance right now - having to become an adult fast, not being able to live the life you want to in this moment or connect with the people who matter, and committing to a day when you will be able to fulfill those dreams and be with the people you love.
Louder Than Bombs - don't know about you, but this song makes me cry every damn day right now. It feel so personal to BTS and ARMY, their recognition of our sadness and pain and commitment to feel it with us and provide us with the songs we need to survive.
ON - We all need a power anthem these days, and daily shouting that I need to "go insane to stay sane," daring the pain and darkness to "bring it on" and revelling in the strength of doing those things that make us who we are, our "oxygen and light in the darkness," is IT for me.
00:00 - I have quarantine days where I can do nothing productive and I feel like an utter failure. This song always reminds me that I can try again tomorrow, and singing confidently that tomorrow (or some unknown tomorrow down the line) I'm gonna be happy, somehow makes it true.
Inner Child - this is the one that makes ALL THE MASCARA run down my face, singing to myself about the hard times we may face, that we have to and will change, that we will be OK, and to keep looking up for that galaxy.
Moon is maybe the PERFECT quarantine love song. The moon and earth can't be together, they are always at a distance, but they stay by each other's sides.
Aaaaand finally, WAB: The Eternal. Hoo boy. I can already picture it, arenas of thousands of ARMY, all of us singing that by uniting we can walk forward through the winter, that we know that spring will come, as long as we are together with @BTS_twt and each other.
I will try to dig into some of the other songs, but these are the ones that have been percolating in my head for some time. Thank you to @doyou_bangtan for your translation work, which I have used when quoting lyrics in this thread. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
