First, this thread is not meant to criticize schools and teachers handed an impossible task on a short timeline...

I have a lot of concerns over seeing statements like:
*You can& #39;t meet IEP/504 plan accommodations online.
*How do I know how long a student was on a page?
*How can I make sure students don& #39;t cheat on quizzes?
*This will all be over in a couple months and we can go back.

It doesn& #39;t feel like many are even asking the right questions.
What are students and parents going to think now about online learning if what they are experiencing now is so chaotic and frustrating? What we are doing now is not Online Learning. This is survival.

I have taught online courses in some capacity now for about 15 years. Nothing I do in those courses resembles what is happening around the country with millions of students now. Again, this isn& #39;t a criticism. There are good reasons for the chaos. Disruption can be good.

Policies and practices districts have developed over years seem to have flown out the window when it comes to how we identify/evaluate tools/resources that we use. This isn& #39;t the time for anything goes.

Like all parents, I& #39;m trying to be patient, but that will only last so long if some kind of strategy and order isn& #39;t implemented very soon. I figure that we in Education have about a month to start making some changes, changes that we should plan on being long-term.

It& #39;s funny to see the things that fall by the wayside when we find out what really matters. The first things we saw schools doing was address food insecurity; emotional well-being; connecting learners to resources.
Look at what we ditched...

Within a few weeks everyone realized how little value we really place on standardized tests; placement exams; high stakes exams; schedules; carnegie units; clear divisions between grades and subject areas, grade point averages, grading in general.

Whatever comes next, I& #39;m hoping we take the lessons from this and maintain some degree of flexibility and now give more than just lip service to things like Personalization, Equity, curriculum design & delivery, assessment, feedback, and the social component of school.

In an effort to help support those new to this, I am creating a list of online learning practitioners in each state who would be willing to serve as a resource to those trying to navigate through this. This isn& #39;t for questions about lessons/tools.

If you need some guidance or collaboration, feel free to reach out. Currently waiting on responses from other states. If you work in this field and are willing to help, you can email me at jtfila@district287.org to be included.

I made this state specific to address particular concerns about local requirements and resources. There are resources posted that will have value to all. Keep in mind, people in that doc are volunteering their time/expertise. Be kind, patient and assume positive intent.

There& #39;s a group to support those working to eliminate educational disparities/inequities in Distance/Online Learning.
Let& #39;s not let the lessons from this event fade should the time come when something closer to what we think as normal approaches.
