South Queens needs a political awakening. While communities across Queens have been able to engage their community members, "leaders", and elected officials. South Queens continues to lag, and the Queens Machine is to blame.
Entrenched pols have no interest in mutual aid or sharing resources since they don't fear being removed. There are many cases in the Punjabi and Bangla communities, yet how many of the SQ pols translated their guides and msgs? 0. Very few have even bothered with Spanish.
Communities have not been able to build movements, because for years we have seen disinvestment of resources while seeing increases in our homes being vacated by DOB, increases in policing, and raids by ICE.
Our pols should have reacted to this crisis right away, but they don't even have the ability to do that. What connections do they really have in our communities aside from power hungry Community Leaders, what accountability do they have when they only show up to exploit.
We need a #PoliticalReckoning . We need 2 build mass movements that center our most impacted communities. We should support ppl like @KhaleelAnderson @MahfuzulFor24 and @DeJesusSaves who realized they needed to shift campaigns for mutual aid while they fight against the machine.
The one things that needs to come out of this crisis is a political awakening. A realization that true help will never come from those too entrenched to care, it can only come from resilient and organized communities.
