All I’m asking is that if you’re white, middle-upper middle class, have means & access to resources, you’re complaining about online learning being too much for you & your kids, and you’re going to just stop doing it, maybe you keep your tweets about it in the drafts.
It’s too much for you? It’s ridiculous what districts are requiring? To a certain, yes I agree with you. This situation is laying bare allllllll the shit that’s wrong, inequitable, & unsustainable w/our educational system. HOWEVER.
Your choosing to opt out of the fuckery and believe that it’ll still work out for Johnny in the end is still a privilege. Millions of BIPOC kids & families don’t have the same choice, nor the same resources, and THAT should infuriate you. You’re frustrated? Understood.
Think of how poor & low-income families must be feeling in this moment too. Think of the families & kids who rely on SpEd, accommodations & support services but aren’t receiving them-even in spite of a district’s best efforts.
Not to get into oppression olympics here, but I’m just saying-I’m reading so many posts from White parents who are freaking out & losing their shit and this is just a reminder that there’s a way to discuss this that doesn’t center you or your particular challenges here.
If you’re going to publicly discuss this, then at least try to do so in a way that recognizes where others might be in this as well. Use your personal experience to question and examine what’s *structurally* wrong & how detrimental the impact is for others too.
As a friend of mine just said-the frustration and anger are warranted. The public “flouncing out of the room” and meltdowns are just really getting to be ridiculous.
Lastly, opting out isn’t an option for some of us b/c we are fully aware that regardless of the circumstances, Black & Brown parents are disproportionately hit by schools w/truancy fines/court hearings that we can’t afford to fight.

Opting out of the fuckery has consequences
Story time: my oldest was diagnosed w/ADHD in 1st grade. Psychologist recommended behavioral therapy in addition to meds. School agreed to a 504 plan, but wouldn’t evaluate to identify if he qualified for other services. We went private & hired a behavioral therapist...
instead of fighting w/the district (I was pregnant and had an autistic 3yr old who was also receiving intervention-I didn’t have time to fight with/the damn district & employer health insurance helped cover the therapy cost.)

Anyway...
We asked the school to allow his therapist to do his weekly sessions on campus or at least allow his therapist to come to his class and observe him. They denied our request. So every Wednesday, he went to therapy in the morning and got to school 2hrs late, at 10:30am.
He was counted as absent even though he was in school from 10:30-3:30 and we had a note from his therapist, the Ped, and his psychologist. In April, they threatened us with/truancy court & fines. Literally didn’t care that he was just kidding 2hrs of school a week for THERAPY.
So when I say opting out of the fuckery has its consequences, especially when you’re Black & Brown, I know what the fuck I’m talking about.

I’m hoping our district now decides not to go back to school this year. But I’m worried b/c if they don’t, I don’t know what the...
the consequences will be if we decide not to risk our family’s health by sending them back...I’m worried not complying will jeopardize their qualifications for 504/IEP/support services through the district.

You see the conflict?
And if we say fuck it and keep them home and our 3 kids lose their eligibility, who’s to say we can afford to fight back?

And we have access to more resources than a lot of other families but it would still be hell to go through. For a variety of reasons.
