Today I've seen,
* A UK regulated TV station interviewing David Icke about his Coronavirus conspiracy theories.
* The Daily Mail publishing a Russian propaganda piece on their new coronavirus clinic.
* The Daily Express labelling footage from two weeks ago was taken yesterday.
I don't believe (though happy to be shown the studies and data that will change my mind) that this is new in the UK. Nor do I believe that the UK is alone in having a media like this. I remain convinced that much of the UK's press is excellent, some of it world-leading.
But I will be keeping this thread handy for any future debate that I find myself in where it is asserted that fake news is particularly the fault of social media and that regulation similar to that we have for traditional media would do much to solve it.
I think that "fake news" is a price worth paying for the freedoms we enjoy and that we have ways to tackle it through continual improvements to the structure of power and government in our nations.
