Question. If you unexpectedly inherited £5m (approx. £330m in 2017) in 1870s #Limerick & decided to leave the city, where would you go? I'm trying to find a Limerick man, his wife & eight kids. He was an architect. I've searched all the usual sources, so anything not so obvious?
His name was D. P. McCarthy. He was the sole beneficiary of his Cork born cousin’s estate in India, who made his fortune in the opium trade. On top of the £5m, McCarthy inherited £150k in landed property. I have his life in fine detail until 1879. This is research for an article.
He built Barrington Terrace.
McCarthy lived here before the disappeared from the historical record. It is now part of a rather lovely hotel.
