Alas the pandemic ended my fieldwork on multiple projects this spring/summer and so I give to you from my quarantine addled brain “Back in the Field” set to the tune of Part of Your World from Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

Movements untold
How many wonders can one species hold?
Looking around here you’d think

I’ve tagged nurse sharks and lemons a plenty

I’ve got reef sharks and tigers galore

You want great hammerheads? I’ve got 15.

But who cares? No big deal. I want more.

I wanna be where the big fish are
I wanna see wanna see em swimming

Gulf Stream

Flippin their caudal fin it sure gets them far
Pec fins are required to help with turnin’
Honin’ in on prey they need
(What’s that organ again?)
Ampullae of Lorenzini

Learn where they eat
Learn where they migrate
Learn what habitats they love and which they hate

Wandering free
Wish I could be
Back in the field!

What would I give
If I could have more days on the water?
What would I pay to spend a day deploying more tags?

But I’m here on land
I understand
There’s a need to be socially distant
Waiting on data
Should be writing
But that’s so bland

And I’m ready to know where these sharks go
Give them some tech
And get some answers
What’s your home range and why does it
(What’s the word?) Expand?

Flatten the curve!
But I’d love
To go track some sharks from above!
Out on the sea
Wish I could be
Back in the field!
