When I asked for "something that starts with D," one of them looked me full in the face, paused, and smirked.
The principal was walking by. I didn't know what he was about to say, but I knew I couldn't stop it. I knew I'd wish I could stop it. He inhaled.

I swear it echoed over the hills. Some caretakers were already parked for pickup.
The other kindergartener dabbed.

But on some level, I was proud that he had remembered what a "D" sounds like. He had struggled to remember before. So I called it a victory—if not for my job security—for his reading. Fin.
