A person is not closer to Fela in spirit simply because they can sing about Nigeria and Africa& #39;s problems. Anyone can sing about problems, but not everyone can RENOUNCE THEIR SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC STATUS to be an equal opportunity social justice advocate. Not Burna, not Falz.
Stop comparing today& #39;s pop culture stars to Fela. Yes, they are big but they are not comparable. They are stars, Fela was not a star. Fela was an outcast who suffered. Fela was beaten and imprisoned. His wives were raped. His mother was killed. Fela had followers not popularity.
Whenever I see a comparison tweet just because an artiste cooked up a sweet jam, my blood boils. We have no sense of history. We have no idea what our true heroes suffered. Fela lived a life that only very few people in Nigeria today can grasp. Stop dishonouring his memory.
In fact, I rest my case. @Catchoris says it all better here: & #39;How African Giant Burna Boy misunderstands Fela and Nigerian politics& #39; https://link.medium.com/3VVYIkLgw5 ">https://link.medium.com/3VVYIkLgw...
