You can’t be against a regime that kills the poor while also believing that the poor don’t deserve humane and sufficient aid.

The regime is framing the legitimate social unrest of the poor as a threat to peace and order. Amid a looming crisis, it is typical populist rhetoric to fan the flames of the latent anxieties and brewing discontent of the middle class to make us turn against the poor.

The crisis threatens the middle class fantasy—and the regime is using it to justify its penalization of the poor as it did to secure support for the drug war.

They want us to hate the poor for getting “more” to cover up the government’s neglect. The poor are not our enemies.
