I’ve been watching some sports docs in lieu of my usual fix. Some recommendations below. Still available on All4 ( https://www.channel4.com/programmes/diego-maradona)the @MaradonaMovie is outstanding film making. Incredible new footage and devastating interviews with those closest to him, as well as Diego.
On @primevideosport The Test gets inside the Aussie cricket team dressing room. Outrageously good access and buy-in from the contributors. A bit of a line in the sand for access docs for me, has anyone got closer than this to an elite team for so long?
On @BBCiPlayer Steve McQueen: The Man and Le Mans is, in my view a sports doc. And it’s the very best - an epic story, beautiful archive, stunning locations and intriguing characters. When Hollywood met motorsport, gripping stuff.
From the same stables, more or less, The Edge, also on @primevideosport is a deep dive in to what it takes to be the best. Andy Flower and Andrew Strauss dragged their England cricket team to the top but the cost was enormous. The contributors bare their souls and it’s brutal.
Death of a Gentleman, another on @primevideosport, came out five years ago but the story stands the test of time. A deep dive into the politics of cricket, a pained love letter to the game and a buddy movie too. With the hundred on the horizon it’s a morality tale for our age.
If you’ve never seen When We Were Kings, now’s a good a time as ever. A 1996 film about Ali and Foreman’s Rumble in the Jungle, it’s brilliantly done. You can find it on @YouTube.
I’m looking forward to @Netflix Drive to Survive which I’m told is even better than Season 1. They seem to have won the trust of the whole F1 paddock.
Also on @Netflix I’ll be binge watching Sunderland til I Die season 2, despite the painful reminder that there’ll be none of the live stuff I’m craving anytime soon.
I’ll be back on @primevideosport for a rewatch of Fire in Babylon, the tale of @windiescricket decade on top of the world.
Anything else I should be watching? Please add suggestions below. Even better if they’re free to view at the moment.
