I think for a lot of us young people, our lives have been defined by elite failure. We came of age as the people in power failed over and over in obvious ways.
From mass incarceration to 9/11 to a fraudulent never ending war to a joke of a heath care system to Katrina to the financial crisis to Flint to stagnant wages to COVID-19 and another financial crisis to the coming climate catastrophe.
None of the people who did these things--not the Iraq war architects, not the bankers who perpetrated mass securities fraud, not police who kill unarmed black people or DAs whose prosecutions filled the prisons--have been held accountable.
In fact, in the Trump era, these people are being held up as wise sages we're supposed to listen to! They're as rich and powerful as ever! LOL
Meanwhile, ordinary people's lives are derailed by a flat tire, by misdemeanor charges and court fees, by police harassment, by illness.
That's why it was such an amazing and truly bizarre feeling to have Bernie as a candidate. We didn't know what it was like to have a semi-viable major party candidate say the bare minimum truth about elite accountability. That we can do better. That we should at least try.
