Precisely 4 weeks ago, @leasimpson and I sent an email to our team which felt so extreme at the time

It said: we think coronavirus is going to get serious. We’re sending you home

Fast-fwd and the world is unrecognizable, we’re all having to adjust

Here’s what I’m learning:
1/
Our response as individuals to this sudden shift in situation looks a lot like the 5 stages of grief:
➖Denial
➖Anger
➖Bargaining (turns out I major on this one)
➖Depression
➖Acceptance

They can come in any order & on repeat. Sometimes they come all at once

#Quarantine
2/
In a crisis, our response mode is usually fight or flight

But there’s also a 3rd response which is often overlooked: freeze. Some people get paralysed & don’t know how to act

It’s hard to spot who may be frozen when you’re a newly remote working team. Regular check-ins help

3/
Once that subsides, I’m (re)learning just how resourceful & creative people can be in times of uncertainty

I’ve been buoyed by new ways @hellobrink and others are creating space online for vulnerability & ideas, for community and collaboration

I’m reminded that resilience can be learned. The science behind it shows it’s all about our perception of events beyond our control. And we can shift our perception over time if we choose

I’m reminded of this by @mkonnikova via @NewYorker

I’m grateful for my #psychology to use as a lens to observe this moment as I experience it. It helps me make sense of it

I’m sure in another 4 weeks the world will be unrecognizable again
