Bernie's Judaism was confusing and uncomfortable to many. Some were eager to paint him as a "fake jew" (??), but he clearly stood for the values that we celebrate tonight: collective liberation. Every generation must see themselves as the slaves leaving Egypt.
A Jewish president was never the end goal, but Bernie's Judaism shined a spotlight on a Judaism of tikkun olam like never before—a Judaism that values the shared struggle of liberation, that never forgets.
He'll always be the first Jew to have won a primary, and to have done so while so openly living his values, while being so unapologetically Jewish, is amazing
As we enter Pesach, I just want to say that I am proud to be part, however small, of a tradition that demands the expansion of our imaginations to include liberation and repairing a (badly, badly, badly) broken world. That's my Judaism. Chag sameach
