I got mad last night about John Prine, his death really hurt me in this. I realize life and death are songs in the wind. I deleted the tweet because the replies became polarizing and political which was never my intention.
John Prine had words that changed my perspective and calmed my emotions. One of the best was “People Puttin’ People Down”. We can’t do that in response to his death. I’m angry and sad about this being the way he went, but I’m extremely grateful for the time we had with him.
My dad used to crank “I ain’t hurtin’ nobody” on repeat in his car. I remember the first time he heard it, we were in the car on Lightning 100 in Nashville. We went to the mall and bought the tape immediately. He didn’t let it go for months. That song made me think of my dad.
I had the opportunity to tell Mr. Prine this the first time I met him. He was just the best. As my mom says, he was the first to start an independent label on his own and really ushered in Americana as an alternative lane to the changing country music scene.
Again, in my hurt, I lashed out looking to blame this on the pandemic, but I know that we all have a time and place to move on into the great beyond, and this was his. At least we are all home and we can use this time to celebrate Mr. Prine & thank him. RIP John Prine.
