Let’s talk about lighting temperature! I’ve been cooped up too long and just got a new type of ring light, so I thought it would be fun to do some side by side comparisons! If you’ve never thought about color temp for your vids, keep reading :)
All shots on Canon T7i 50mm/1.8 at 200 ISO with a custom balance (obv this would be adjusted for each light but I wanted to show accurate differences between them)

Here is the fluorescent ring light I’ve had since 2015, vs the LED I just purchased
The reason I finally caved and got this is because I have ALWAYS had the issue of skin tones appearing too green in shots, I think the camera may skew this way but the light definitely wasn’t helping. In general LED seems to push more magenta/blue, which is what I want!
Now let’s compare the ring to my LED panel, which I sometimes use as a key light (notice the even cooler temp at 5600K)
(Also, of course it acts more like a spotlight so it’s great for low lit shots)
This is fun - with this LED panel I have an orange filter to turn it into 3200K, and I can use that as is or change to tungsten setting to correct it for “normal” (this helps if you have lots of blues in the shot that you want to pop without affecting skin tone
Since I’m bored, let’s get out all the other lights I have lol Here is the soft box as a key for comparison - I realized I changed the bulbs at one point so here’s with both options there (ironically the change to LED made it worse bc I didn’t realize the color temp was WARMER)
Why is this important? For one thing, I had to light a white backdrop recently, and used the warmer soft box + the very cool LED panel, and the color diff against white is VERY noticeable and impossible to correct 😅
Using warmer lights is super fun to do as RIM lights however, here are some examples of whites vs 2700 and 3200 orange as a hair light
I really love adding warm color to hair lights to warm the shot without turning my skin orange lol But the super cool light also gives my hair a kind of purple tone which I love since it doesn’t look that way irl 🤣
This isn’t even getting into other fun stuff like color gels 🤣 But thinking about your base color temps with white can be SO tricky to nail down, and it makes a huge difference.
