If you supported Bernie because you like his ideology, and want the party to move left, I wholeheartedly welcome you. I don't disagree! Democrats should move left. We have been, in fact, and that needs to keep going, I hope you'll join with us, and keep pushing for better things.
If you supported Bernie because you think the health care system in this country is still broken, or that we don't have enough of a social safety net, join the club! We many not all agree on how to fix it, but Dems believe it needs fixing. Your voice is important in solving it.
Understand, things might not move as fast as you want. That's not because the Democrats are feckless or secretly evil. It's because the US is big, our system moves slowly, and the Republicans are organized. But that doesn't mean change shouldn't or can't happen. It can and must.
And it's important to have people demanding that we do push forward. It's important to hold people accountable without destroying allies. It's important to come together to move the country to a better future. And if that's what you want, I want to work with you.
But.
But.
If you backed Bernie because revolution seems cool, and you didn't want to be a normie; or because politics doesn't really affect you and you view this as a spectator sport; or because you think getting dunks in on Twitter is praxis?
Well, you're gonna back Trump anyhow. Bye.
Well, you're gonna back Trump anyhow. Bye.
The good news is you are not only not influential on Twitter, you're not even a significant part of Bernie's support. Most of Bernie's supporters just want a better country, a better world, and a better life.
There's nothing wrong with that. And they will be heard.
There's nothing wrong with that. And they will be heard.
The loud online Bernie supporters are not the left. The left is a lot more interesting and diverse. And that left -- the one that understands that this is gonna take work, and compromise, and frustration, but that with it, anything is possible -- they will win the day.
I say this from the bottom of my heart: I have no problem with the Democrats and this country as a whole moving left. I very much would like it to. But the way that happens is not, unfortunately, through a quick revolution. It's gonna take a lot of time and work.
So let's do it.
So let's do it.
