The State of Wisconsin didn't make any changes to its law or election funding to accommodate the fact that we are in the midst of a pandemic, but hundreds of thousands of people voted. /2
There was an eight fold increase in applications to vote by during this primary from the last federal *general election*. The state did not have the resources it needed to process all of those applications. /3
People waited in lines to vote in person for hours, and risked their health and lives in Milwaukee because there weren't enough poll workers or polling places. /4
The long and short is come November, people are going to try to find a way to vote, even if there are no changes in our voting laws. They are going to find a way. They are going to apply for mail ballots. They are going to show up in person and wait in line. /5
So the question is, are we going to provide states with the resources they need to run credible elections, or are we going to see the debacle we saw in Wisconsin yesterday which is good for no one? /6
Are states going to make the legal changes necessary to ensure that election officials succeed? And to ensure the safety of their workers and voters?
Politicians in Washington DC aren't going to stop people from voting by mail. They aren't going to stop people from waiting in line to vote.
They may make it extremely difficult for election officials, who are committed to making our elections work, from succeeding. That would be terrible for our country, regardless of which party comes out on top in November.
